Boundary Jr. Miss Selected To Study In Alaska

Betsy Faber, a Bonners Ferry High School junior, has been selected by Dr. Richard Marston of the University of Alaska to participate in the Juneau Icefield Research Project.

Faber, who was selected as this year’s Boundary County Junior Miss, will give up her title to participate in the program and will spend two months of the summer on an expedition to an icefield to study geology and glaciology with students and staff from around the world.

She is a 4.0 student and was selected as one of 15 high school students nationwide to participate in the project and hopes the experience will enhance her interest in zoology and environmental science.

She is the daughter of Michael and Lynn Faber.

Two local teachers were recently recognized for their dedication to excellence in education with grants.

Lloyd Moe, a sixth-grade teacher at Athol Elementary School and Greg Cossetto, a biology and geology teacher at Post Falls High School, received Outstanding Teacher Awards from the Idaho Forest Products Commission.

The awards honor exceptional education and acknowledge exemplary approaches to teaching about forest-related topics.

Jerri Weiss, was selected as the April Kootenai Medical Center Employee of the Month.

Weiss, who has worked for KMC for more than 20 years, works in the hospital housekeeping department. She was chosen for her concern for her department and co-workers, daily good humor and attitude, and guidance she provides to new employees.

Two Lake City High School seniors have been chosen as the April and May Kiwanis Scholars of the Month. Christy Larsen, daughter of Al and Nancy Larsen, was chosen for April, and Jennifer Wandrey, daughter of Kurt and Diann Wandrey, was selected for May.

Larsen is a two-year DECA member and a 3.9 grade-point average honor student. She is also involved in leadership class, church and community volunteer work, Christmas Food Drive, drama, and the elementary tutor program and was recently in a North Idaho College theater production.

Wandrey, May’s scholar is a 3.94 grade-point average student and is involved in church and school volunteer organizations, including Volunteers in Action. She is president of Key Club and holds a part-time job at the Learning Store.

Ramsey Elementary School recently participated in News Bowl USA 1997, a state and national current events knowledge competition for fourth- through eighth-graders.

Ramsey’s fourth-grade classes taught by Jeanne Hamilton, Gayle Foote and Sandy Ambrose scored in the 99 percentile in Idaho.

The contest, a 100 multiple-choice-question test administered via computer, was devised to motivate elementary and middle school students to pay closer attention to news.

Eight Coeur d’Alene residents recently graduated from Boise State University. Graduates for August 1996, December 1996 and May 1997 and their degrees are listed.

David Dust, bachelor of arts, art education; Connie Hallgreen, bachelor of arts, English teaching; Erika Brashear, bachelor of fine arts, art education; Darrin Murphey, bachelor of arts, economics, social science option; Kristena Beito and Johnny Hunt, bachelor of arts, elementary education; Scot Johnson, bachelor of arts, communication training and development; and Laura Bethke, bachelor of arts, sociology.
