Cheney Oboist Hitting All The High Notes

Bethany Schoeff, a Cheney High School senior, won first place in the Washington State Music Education Association’s recent solo competition.

In January, Schoeff, who plays the oboe, won the Young Artists Concerto Competition sponsored by Gonzaga University. In March, she won the Spokane Youth Symphony Concerto Competition, which she also won in 1995.

She is the principal oboe player with the Cheney High School Wind Ensemble, the Spokane Youth Orchestra and Eastern Washington University’s Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.

Schoeff will attend The Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Fla., on a full scholarship.

Dorothy Detlor-Langan, dean of the School of Nursing at Pacific Lutheran University, has been named dean of the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education, effective Aug. 1.

She is a graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, Whitworth College, the University of Maryland and Gonzaga University.

Three students in the Central Valley School District have received CV’s Parent, Teacher, Student Association Council’s Memorial Scholarships.

The students, their high schools and scholarship amounts are:

Marcy MacPhee, Central Valley, and Kori Peters, University, will each receive $600 scholarships.

Rebecca Deehr, Central Valley, will receive $450.

Selections were based on personal achievements, financial need, community service and pursuit of excellence.

The scholarships, funded by donations, are in memory of Michael Gomez Jr., who attended the CV School District.

Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class William Carl, Army Reserve Staff Sgt. Paul Morden and Army Reserve 2nd Lt. Elizabeth Simpson participated in the world’s largest joint tactical air operations annual exercise dubbed “Roving Sands.”

The operational objectives were to plan, establish and operate a joint integrated air defense system.

Carl is the son of Virgie Hillbrick, Spokane and a graduate of Medical Lake High School and Spokane Community College.

Morden is a graduate of Deer Park High School.

Simpson is the daughter of Don and Eileen Genest, Mead, and a graduate of Mead High School and Washington State University.
