Molitor’s Big Day Leads Twins To Win

Associated Press

Paul Molitor went 4 for 4 with a two-run triple to help Bob Tewksbury to his first Metrodome victory of the season in Minnesota’s 10-1 win over visiting Texas.

Molitor, who had four hits for the second time in four games, added a double and two singles after his firstinning triple.

Orioles 7-4, Red Sox 2-2

Boston

Cal Ripken went 4 for 4 in the second game of a doubleheader as Baltimore completed a sweep of Boston.

Scott Erickson (9-2) took a shutout into the eighth inning before giving up Mo Vaughn’s two-run homer in the first game.

With the sweep, Baltimore improved to 42-17 - baseball’s best record.

In the second game, Randy Myers got two outs for his 20th save.

Indians 5, Brewers 4

Cleveland

David Justice drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, and Charles Nagy (7-3) got the win.

Jose Valentin hit a three-run homer in the sixth off Nagy, giving the Brewers a 4-3 lead that Cal Eldred couldn’t hold.

Tigers 6, Athletics 4

Detroit

Willie Blair won for the first time since his jaw was broken by a line drive last month. Blair (4-2) made his second start since a liner by Cleveland’s Julio Franco broke the pitcher’s jaw.

In the sixth, Oakland slugger Mark McGwire and manager Art Howe were ejected for arguing a called third strike. After the ejection, McGwire threw bats, helmets and a ball onto the field.

Yankees 12, White Sox 1

New York

New York’s Andy Pettitte came within two outs of his first career shutout.

Pettitte (8-3) had little trouble with a Chicago lineup missing the A.L.’s top hitter, Frank Thomas, who missed a fourth game with a strained abdominal muscle.

Angels 6, Royals 2

Kansas City, Mo.

Anaheim center fielder Jim Edmonds made a sensational lunging catch in the fifth and then knocked in the go-ahead run with a double an inning later.

Kansas City’s Kevin Appier (4-5) failed for the seventh time to get his 100th career victory.
