Royals Beat Stars; Wheaton Delivers
Chris Wheaton’s bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning Tuesday continued the rude treatment given to the North Stars, defending champions of AAA American Legion baseball.
Wheaton’s three runs batted in gave the Royals (1-0) a 5-4 win over the North Stars (0-2) at Gonzaga University.
Taylor West’s two-run triple in the sixth gave the North Stars a 4-2 lead. The North Stars, who won the title in 1996 when the AAA format was first adopted, opened Monday with a 15-5 loss to the Cannons.
Cheney’s Tucker Urdahl and Bryan Miller were among seven area players selected for the Washington all-state baseball series at Eastmont High in East Wenatchee this weekend.
Also chosen by an all-state committee were Grant Reeves, Mead; Aaron Fryer, University; George Petticrew, Lakeside; Abe Nisbet, Northwest Christian; and Jeremy Fox, Garfield-Palouse.
Ten area players had been nominated after last weekend’s feeder games at Rogers High.
Games Saturday are AAA/B Nationals vs. AA/A Nationals, 1 p.m.; and AAA/B Americans vs. AA/A Americans, 4 p.m. On Sunday, losers play at 10:30 a.m., winners at 1:30 p.m.
