Sharp Resigns Basketball Job At Cda High
Sheila Sharp has resigned as head girls basketball coach at Coeur d’Alene High School.
Sharp, a CdA graduate, was hired when the school split to form two schools three years ago.
At the time, all the returning experience from the undefeated State A-1 championship team in 1993-94 played at the city’s new school, Lake City. Sharp took over with relatively no returning experience.
Sharp’s record in three years was 14-50.
In a resignation letter faxed to the media, Sharp cited personal reasons for resigning. She handed in her resignation May 29.
“My administrators did not want to accept my resignation, but I have thought out this decision thoroughly,” Sharp wrote in her letter. “The past three months I have agonized, thought and re-thought - contemplated my priorities - and finally reached a decision. This will allow more time with my young family.”
Sharp leaves a healthier program behind than she inherited.
“She started from scratch, maybe even less than that,” CdA athletic director Larry Schwenke said. “She was at a real disadvantage with the (split). I’m really saddened. She’s a great person and a class act.”
Schwenke said administrators haven’t addressed the vacancy. A possible candidate for the job is Schwenke’s daughter, Keri, a former Vikings and Eastern Washington University standout, whose hire as a teacher at CdA was approved at a board meeting Monday.
CdA High’s top returning girls basketball and volleyball player, Kellie Stern, a junior to be, is transferring across town.
Stern officially registered at LC this week. Her parents are building a home in the LC district.
She started last year as a middle blocker in volleyball and was a two-year starter in basketball.
Drager’s jobs filled
A Kellogg native has been hired to replace longtime Mullan football and boys basketball coach John Drager.
Brian Arthun will take over for Drager, who resigned his coaching positions but will teach and serve as athletic director one more year before retiring.
After graduating from Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Mont., Arthun spent one year as a head football coach at Shields Valley (Mont.) High School. He was an assistant football coach at Rocky Mountain the past two years.
“He comes highly recommended,” Mullan superintendent Robin Stanley said. “One of the things we liked about Brian is he played eight-man football in high school.”
Arthun graduated from Absarokee, Mont., where the teams went a combined 39-1 in his four years. He also started in three state championship games.
Legend’s son hired
Tyler Haynes, son of longtime coach Don Haynes, has been named boys basketball coach at Sandpoint High. It will be his first head coaching job.
Haynes replaces Jack Dyck, whose teams posted a 43-68 record in five years.
Haynes played for his father at Coeur d’Alene High in 1988-89, where he graduated. Following graduation, he assisted under his father. After his father retired, Haynes continued as an assistant under Jim Winger.
Tyler Haynes, 26, finished college at Boise State University. He was an assistant at Boise High and spent the past two seasons as an assistant under former Kellogg coach Dave Roberts at Meridian.
He was selected from a field of 11 applicants. Jerry Uhling of Deary was the other candidate interviewed.
Priest River fined
Priest River High has been fined $500 and placed on one year probation for using an academically ineligible boys basketball player last season, the Idaho High School Activities Association has announced.
Priest River voluntarily reported the violation this spring when it learned that Brett Storro was ineligible during the first semester.
The Spartans had to forfeit three wins, so they officially finished 2-19 overall.
Storro was voted the team’s most valuable player.
Edwards-Barker win
Stan Edwards and Ron Barker won the third annual Babe Streeter best-ball golf tournament with a 136 stroke total Sunday at the Shoshone Golf Club near Wallace.
Bob Christiansen and John Cook tied Ernie Hill and Jim Bob Coleman for second at 137.
Jack Bonomi and Pat Silivan were low net at 128.
Washington Legion
Chris Wheaton’s bases-loaded triple in the seventh inning Tuesday continued the rude treatment given to the North Stars, defending champions of AAA American Legion baseball.
Wheaton’s three runs batted in gave the Royals (1-0) a 5-4 win over the North Stars (0-2) at Gonzaga University.
Taylor West’s two-run triple in the sixth gave the North Stars a 4-2 lead.
