Mead Junior High Earns Top Honors In Competition

Mead Junior High School took home top honors from the Washington State History Day Contest at Central Washington University.

Students Jacob Swanson and Colin McGlocklin received the Best State and Local History Awards for their group exhibit, “Hanford: Triumphs and Tragedies.”

Roger Barenz, a Mead Junior High social studies teacher, received the Teacher of Merit Award as the state’s Most Outstanding History Teacher.

Natalia Swenson won a $1,000 National Honor Society scholarship from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Swenson, daughter of Monte and Jann Swenson of LaCrosse, Wash., competed against more than 12,000 students nationwide for the award, which was given to 250 students.

She will attend Gonzaga University in the fall and participate in the Honors Program.

Shannon Bonogofski, a 1994 graduate of Mead High School, now a student at Washington State University, has been named an AllAmerican Collegiate Scholar. She is the daughter of Daniel and Jane Bonogofski of Spokane.

Eight Inland Northwest students are graduating from Montana State University-Bozeman.

The students are listed by their hometowns and degrees:

Coulee Dam: Jason Jackson, bachelor of science.

Deer Park: Tamara O’Brien,, bachelor of science.

Pullman: Matthew Folwell, master of science.

Spokane: Jyostna Pendyala, PhD; Maya Farris, bachelor of arts; Amy Schruth, bachelor of arts; Misty Blakesley, bachelor of science; and Eric Gustafson, bachelor of science.

Washington students who received $1,500 Advanced Honor Scholarships to attend Montana State University-Bozeman in the fall are: Leah Hannan of Pullman; Travis Greenwalt of Spangle; and Andrew Cooper, Adam Mortensen, Katherine Sluder and Jason Weatherred all of Spokane.

Spokane students attending the University of Oregon who earned a place on the Dean’s List with at least a 3.75 grade-point average are:

Krista Garcia, David Geraghty, Jolie Jensen and Kevin Kerwien.

Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Laird, son of Dave and Betty Laird of Spokane, graduated from the security apprentice course at the Air Force Security Police Academy in San Antonio.

He is a 1980 graduate of Mead High School.
