Led by Jon Drummond’s 9.92-second clocking in the 100 meters, the recently maligned U.S. men’s sprint corps reasserted its authority as five broke the 10-second mark Thursday in the preliminary heats in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The semifinal times were not nearly as fast, but the prelim times were stunning - Tim Montgomery, Kareem Streete-Thompson and Maurice Greene all set personal bests by clocking 9.96. Mike Marsh ran 9.97.

World record-holder Randy Barnes won the shot put with a world-best 72 feet, 3-1/2 inches.

Kelly Blair of Prosser, Wa., won her second straight national heptathlon title with a career-best 6,465 points.

Bill Schuffenhaur of Moscow USA placed sixth in the decathlon with 8,108 points. Steve Fritz won his first national title with 8,604 points.

His second-day marks were: 110 hurdles, 14.99 seconds; pole vault, 14-5-1/4; discus, 156-5; javelin, 211-10; and 1,500 meters, 4:37.02. He finished second in the javelin and third in the discus.

Schuffenhaur qualified for the United States vs. Germany decathlon competition in Germany in July and the World University Games in Italy in August.
