Unser Found Guilty

Compiled From Wire Services

Former race car champion Bobby Unser labored through waist-deep snow, dug a snow cave for shelter from the howling winds and slid down steep, snowy cliffs after his snowmobile broke down in Colorado’s backcountry.

He was rescued, only to be cited for violating the Wilderness Act of 1964, which forbids motor vehicles in federal wilderness areas. And now Unser has been convicted in federal court in Denver and fined $75.

The ordeal likely isn’t over for the three-time winner of the Indianapolis 500. Proclaiming his innocence, Unser said after the two-day trial he might appeal to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“I’m obviously extremely disappointed,” the Albuquerque, N.M., resident said. “I didn’t do anything wrong.”
