Ferris Stars Place Second

Isaac Hawkins and Jennifer Smith of Ferris both finished in second place during 2-mile runs Friday at the national scholastic outdoor track and field meet at Raleigh, N.C.

The Stanford-bound Hawkins finished the boys race in 9 minutes, 2.51 seconds. Winner Ryan Andrus of Orem, Utah, ran 8:58.05.

Smith, headed to Colorado, ran 10:28.66. Sharon Van Tuyl, of Michigan, won in 10:25.59.

Hawkins and Smith just swept the State AAA 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Both compete in the 1-mile today.

Legion baseball

Catcher Matt Clouse drove in two runs and the Royals (2-0) scored seven second-inning runs on three hits to beat the Cannons 8-5 in an AAA game at Shadle Park’s Jackson Field.

Ben Miller doubled twice and had two RBIs for the Cannons (2-1).

Also at Jackson, Ryan Corigliano, Eric Hayden and Sean Hughes had three RBIs apiece to lead the Blue Devils (1-1) to a 21-6 win over the North Stars (0-4).

The Blue Devils scored nine runs on six hits in the first. Brian Schutz of the North Stars had two RBIs.
