Angry Becker Ousted
Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov beat an agitated Boris Becker 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals of the $875,000 Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany.
The Russian needed four match points to oust the fourth-seeded Becker and reach the finals of the Wimbledon tuneup for the second straight year.
Kafelnikov will face eighth-seeded Petr Korda today after the Czech player defeated Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.
Goran Ivanisevic outlasted Britain’s Greg Rusdeski in a third-set tiebreaker that lasted 38 points to advance to the final of the Queen’s Club grass-court tournament in London.
Both players had six match points and changed ends six times in the tiebreaker before the third-seeded Croatian served his 13th ace to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (20-18).
Earlier, sixth-seeded Mark Philippoussis defeated Sweden’s Jonas Bjorkman 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 to become the first Australian to reach the Queen’s final in 17 years.
Gustavo Kuerten, the surprise winner of the French Open last week, breezed past Marzio Martelli to advance to the finals of the Carisbo International tennis tournament in Bologna, Italy.
Kuerten, No. 15 in the ATP rankings, will meet Felix Mantilla of Spain in today’s final.
