Artwalk Offers A Chance To ‘Graze And Gaze’

Suzanne Pate Correspondent

Strap on your rollerblades, lace up those plimsolles, gas up the Harley do whatever it takes to get to Sandpoint for Artwalk, which runs from Friday through July 31.

The doubleheader event, put together by the Pend Oreille Arts Council, features 17 stops to see good, affordable work made by regional artists. The next round of shows begins Aug. 1 and goes through Sept. 12.

If you arrive hungry you sure won’t leave that way, because the 10 sites for Friday’s opening receptions offer a sort of “graze and gaze” approach to satisfying the tummy and soul simultaneously.

Ginny Robideaux, POAC executive director, advises visitors to pick up a brochure that maps the tour. They’re available at all tour stops and the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce.

“We have so many locations this year that we have more options with three-dimensional art than ever before, including two locations by the Bonner Mall on Highway 95 north,” said Robideaux.

The Selkirk Gallery in Sandpoint will present an outdoor garden theme among sculptures, fountains and stepping stones handcrafted by artisans - enhanced by flowering plants from a local greenhouse.

The Lyman Gallery spotlights the graphite and watercolor work of David Hechtner. Visit ArtWorks Gallery to see slateworks, watercolors, fine jewelry, fused glass, sculpture and calligraphy. Kincaid Jewelry features floral art by Corene Jones. And Eklektos Gallery hosts a reception for a trio of artists showing oil paintings, photography and assemblage.

Sandpoint’s Artwalk has proven well-worth the mileage over its 11-year life. Have fun, and please don’t fight over the black bean dip.

Friday’s sneak preview receptions begin at 5 p.m. at the Selkirk, Lyman, Kincaid, Eve’s Leaves and Northwest Artisans; 5:30 p.m. at Art Works and the POAC gallery; and at 6 p.m. at Monarch Mountain Coffee in the Canyon Mall, Pend Oreille Bank and Eklektos. Each lasts an hour and a half or longer.

Tour stops will be open during regular business hours on other days.
