Dollar Climbs Despite Trade Data

The dollar recouped from a drop caused by a surging Japanese trade surplus to end higher Wednesday after top U.S. officials hinted they won’t confront Japan over the imbalance at the Group of Seven summit.

Rising military tensions on the Korean peninsula and further indications that Europe’s planned single currency will be a weak successor to the mark also helped underpin the dollar.

The results left the dollar slightly stronger against the yen and mark.
