5.1 Temblor Rocks Southern Japan
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 shook southern Japanese islands Thursday night, but there were no reports of damage or injuries.
The quake shook houses and toppled vases on Miyakojima island, 1,250 miles southwest of Tokyo, the Central Meteorological Agency said.
Masaki Yamazato, an officer at the police station on the island of 50,000 people, said no major damage or injuries had been reported.
The meteorological agency said the epicenter of the quake was 35 miles undersea off Miyakojima. No tidal wave warnings were issued.
