Juden Wins Eighth With Hr Support

Vladimir Guerrero and Henry Rodriguez homered, and Jeff Juden won his third consecutive start as the Montreal Expos defeated the Florida Marlins 4-3 Saturday in Montreal for their 12th win in 14 games.

Mike Lansing hit a game-tying double in the seventh off Pat Rapp (4-4) and scored when catcher Greg Zaun’s pickoff throw bounced into left for an error. Rodriguez followed with his 15th homer.

Juden (8-2) allowed three runs and eight hits in 7-2/3 innings, and Ugueth Urbina finished for his 13th save.

Astros 7, Cubs 3 Houston

Tim Bogar hit three doubles and Houston chased Frank Castillo after just four outs, sending Chicago to its fourth consecutive loss.

Luis Gonzalez went 0 for 3 with a walk in the seventh, stopping his hitting streak at 23 games.

Mets 3, Pirates 2 New York

Butch Huskey, Carlos Baerga and Todd Hundley combined on a spectacular play at the plate to prevent Pittsburgh from scoring the tying run in the ninth.

Edgardo Alfonzo erased a 2-1 deficit with a two-run homer off Marc Wilkins (5-1) with two outs in the eighth. But Pittsburgh, which lost its fifth straight, nearly came back in the ninth when Kevin Polcovich tried to score on Jose Guillen’s double into the left-field corner.

Huskey overthrew the cutoff man, shortstop Edgardo Alfonzo. Baerga, the second baseman, was backing up and caught Huskey’s throw, relaying a perfect strike to the plate.

Dodgers 11, Giants 0 San Francisco

Tom Candiotti (4-2) allowed four hits in seven innings in his first 1997 start and Raul Mondesi drove in three runs and scored three times for L.A.

Giants starter William VanLandingham (4-5) allowed six runs and seven hits in five-plus innings.

Cardinals 6, Reds 2 St. Louis

Royce Clayton drove in two runs as St. Louis stopped a five-game losing streak.

Todd Stottlemyre (5-5) won for the first time in four starts, giving up two runs in six-plus innings.

Brian Jordan and Ron Gant each had two hits, scored a run and drove in one for St. Louis. Willie Greene hit his 10th home run for the Reds.

Braves 9, Phillies 8 Philadelphia

Andruw Jones became the first player to homer into the upper deck in center field at Veterans Stadium since Mike Schmidt in 1975, and Atlanta handed the Phillies their seventh straight loss.

Kevin Stocker had three hits for the Phillies.

Rockies 9, Padres 4 San Diego

Andres Galarraga had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Larry Walker also homered for Colorado.

Tony Gwynn, out two games because of an inflamed right Achilles tendon, made a surprise start and was 1 for 4 with a walk for San Diego. He is batting .391, second to Walker, who leads the majors with a .415 average.
