Muturi Repeats In Grandma’s Marathon
Patrick Muturi won his second consecutive Grandma’s Marathon on Saturday in Duluth, Minn., and 1995 women’s winner Irena Bogacheva won the women’s title.
Muturi, 24, of Kenya, crossed the finish line in 2 hours, 15 minutes, 44 seconds. Bogacheva, 36, a native of Russia, finished at 2:38:45. Each won $7,000.
Muturi, a former Washington State University standout, broke away at 18 miles to become the second back-to-back men’s champion in race history. Simon Peter of Tanzania was second in the men’s race at 2:16:07.
Boxing
Joe Roberts of the Lilac City Boxing Club placed second in the 119-pound division of the National Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament in Marquette, Mich.
Roberts lost a 5-0 decision in the championship bout to Steven Luevano of La Puente, Calif.
Prep football
Tyler Teeple of King’s High threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Duncan Bagley midway through the fourth quarter to help the West defeat the East 22-15 in the A-B All-Star football game in Yakima.
Chewelah’s Cody Katzer got the East on the scoreboard first with a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He finished with 49 yards on seven carries.
Josh Fitzpatrick of Davenport rushed eight times for 21 yards, and Garfield-Palouse’s Korry Sheffler caught one pass for 8 yards.
Cascade’s Carl Haberberger, who rushed nine times for 68 yards, was the game’s MVP.
Prep baseball
Washington defeated Oregon 12-9 in the first game of an All-Star doubleheader in Vancouver. The second game was cancelled because of inclement weather.
