Saturday Morning Blaze Destroys Duplex’s Deck, Roof

From Staff And Wire Reports

Firefighters are investigating a blaze that destroyed a duplex’s deck, its roof and ruined its siding Saturday morning.

No one was seriously hurt, thanks in part to a passerby who noticed flames licking at the house’s deck at 1914 E. Jackson. The driver stopped and told a woman inside that her home was on fire, said Spokane Fire Battalion Chief Joe Stapleton.

By the time fire crews arrived at about 9:14, the deck was engulfed and the fire was burning through the siding and into the attic.

Firefighters fought a two-pronged campaign, bringing hoses inside and pulling down the ceiling to get at the attic. Others were on the roof, knocking a hole in it to douse the flames from above.

Investigators aren’t sure what caused the fire, but believe it started in an overstuffed chair on the deck outside. , DataTimes
