Cone Finds Groove, Whiffs 16 Tigers
David Cone struck out 16, his highest total in six years, and Cecil Fielder hit a three-run homer against his former team Monday night to lead the New York Yankees over the Detroit Tigers 5-2.
Cone (8-3), who had shoulder surgery to repair an aneurysm on May 10, 1996, allowed four hits in eight innings - two were homers by Bob Hamelin and Damion Easley - and walked two, needing just 127 pitches. He struck out the side in the third and eighth innings.
Cone, who has lost once in 13 starts since April 16, set his career high when he fanned 19 - one short of the record for a nineinning game - for the New York Mets at Philadelphia on Oct. 6, 1991.
Fielder went 2 for 3 with a walk. His home run was his eighth of the season.
White Sox 7, Royals 6 Chicago
Albert Belle homered and robbed Chili Davis of a possible go-ahead, three-run homer in the ninth inning, leading Chicago’s rally past Kansas City.
Harold Baines and Mike Cameron also homered, helping Chicago, which trailed 6-3 in the sixth inning, to its fifth win in seven games.

Matt Lawton had four hits and Brad Radke won his fourth consecutive start for Minnesota.
Cleveland’s Sandy Alomar extended his hitting streak to 22 games.
Angels 1, Rangers 0 Arlington, Texas
Allen Watson pitched six shutout innings and Jim Leyritz homered in the fifth to give Anaheim its fifth consecutive victory and Texas its sixth consecutive defeat.
Brewers 5, Orioles 0 Milwaukee
Jeff D’Amico pitched a four-hitter for his first career complete game and Milwaukee sent Jimmy Key to his second consecutive defeat.
D’Amico (5-3) struck out six and walked none. Of 106 pitches, only 21 were balls.
Red Sox 7, Blue Jays 6 Toronto
Mike Stanley and Tim Naehring hit consecutive homers in Boston’s five-run seventh inning.
Wil Cordero hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs for Boston, which overcame a 3-0 deficit, took a 7-3 lead and then held on for its ninth win in 12 games.

Indians outfielder Manny Ramirez is the player of the week after hitting a league-best .545 with two home runs and eight RBIs… .
