Shady Snooze Can Beat Summertime Blues

Don And Dave Runyan U-Bild Features

A good book, a tall glass of iced tea and the gentle swaying motion of a shady hammock on the patio, next to the pool or in the yardsounds like paradise, doesn’t it? With a few basic tools and some inexpensive materials, any do-it-yourselfer with a free weekend can create a place to relax and catch a few winks.

This easy-to-build hammock frame project calls primarily for straight cuts and requires only basic construction techniques. Made entirely of straight-grain Douglas fir, the frame is not only sturdy, comfortable and safe, but it’s attractive.

Construction is simply a matter of measuring, cutting out the pieces and assembling them with carriage bolts and lag bolts. Once the frame is put together, apply the finish of choice, add a hammock and relax.

Designed to fit a standard-size hammock sling, the completed project measures 16 feet long by 4 feet wide.

The Hammock Frame plan, No. 868, is $8.95 and includes step-by-step directions with 11 photos, detailed construction diagrams, a shopping list and cutting schedule and a mail-order source for a hammock and hanging kit.

A package of outdoor furniture plans, No. C94, is $22.95 and includes plans for an outdoor rocker, a lawn glider swing, a tree seat and a glider settee. Prices include postage and handling. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery (for rush delivery, add $1 per item up to $3 maximum and allow about one week).
