Soldiers Drag Off Opposition Leader

Compiled From Wire Services

Soldiers entered the home of Congolese opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi Thursday, smashed down his bedroom door and hustled him away hours after he gave a conciliatory political speech. President Laurent Kabila has banned all political activity since ousting dictator Mobutu Sese Seko last month.

It wasn’t clear whether Tshisekedi had been arrested. A police commander said Tshisekedi had not been arrested, and had been taken to see Kabila.

Tshisekedi, jailed repeatedly for his opposition to Mobutu, has accused Kabila of establishing a new dictatorship.
