90 Mph Chase Ends When Car Hits House
Deer Park man was arrested Saturday after allegedly leading police on a car chase, crashing into a house and being thrown through the front windshield of his car.
Police drove more than 90 mph to stop Douglas P. Breitkreutz, a 38-year-old who was jailed for vehicular assault.
They first found him about 4:30 a.m. switching license plates from a blue Datsun to a white Celica near the 1800 block of West 11th Avenue.
When an officer attempted to follow Breitkreutz in the Celica, the suspect accelerated and headed east on Interstate 90. He took the Altamont exit and continued east on Third Avenue. After trying to turn right on Third and Haven, he lost control.
The car hit the house at 307 S. Haven and came to rest in the yard. No one inside was injured.
Breitkreutz, who was thrown through the windshield, fled the scene. Police said he tried to break into another car about a block away but they caught him.
His passenger, Troy White, 28, suffered a laceration to his neck, caused by the Haven street sign that was imbedded in the roof of the vehicle.
Police said that White also tried to escape but they quickly stopped him.
After being treated for cuts and abrasions, the two were taken to jail. White was booked for first-degree possession of stolen property.
In addition to vehicular assault, Breitkreutz also was charged with attempting to elude police, first-degree possession of stolen property, second-degree possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and third-degree assault for allegedly hitting a police officer in the arm.
