Skyhawks Advance To Semifinal Round

The Spokane Skyhawks cruised into the semifinal round of the Pikes Peak Invitational U15 girls soccer tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Alissa Riccelli scored three second-half goals Saturday to spark the Skyhawks to a 4-0 victory over the Colorado Springs Chargers in the final match of round-robin play.

Holly Ready, Courtney Lynn and Rachel Lassman picked up assists on Riccelli’s goals.

Lindsey Fundine, on an assist from Jill Severson, staked the Skyhawks to a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Spokane will play a team from Ohio or Texas in today’s semifinal game. The championship match will be played this afternoon.

Junior golf

Spokane’s Reid Hatley and Royal Stumph finished 1-2 at the USGA Boys Junior Championship sectional qualifying golf tournament Saturday at Manito Golf and Country Club.

Hatley won the tournament with an even-par 73-69-142. Stumph shot 73-70-143.

Hatley and Stumph qualified for the 50th National USGA Junior Amateur Championship to be held July 22-26 at Aronomink GC in Newtown Square, Pa.

Also at Manito, Bridget Johnson of Spokane shot a four-over-par 76 to finish in a two-way tie for third and qualify for the 49th National USGA Junior Girls Championship July 28-Aug. 2 at the Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn.

Jimin Kang of Lynnwood, Wash., shot a 71 for medalist honors.

AAU girls basketball

The Spokane Stars 18U and 17U basketball teams each went 2-0 after the first day of the AAU girls tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The 18U Stars opened with a 105-70 win over the Wisconsin Lakers. Tumwater’s Heidi Hatcher scored 15 points and Central Valley’s Crystal Lee added 11 points and five steals to pace the Stars.

The 18U Stars followed with a 85-67 win over the Michigan Motor City Blazers behind the 24 points of Mountain View High’s Angelina Wolvert.

The 17U Stars beat the Ozark Rhodes Renegades 75-69 then pounded the South Texas Austin Lady Knights 73-27.

Amy George from Ferris High topped the Stars with 16 points in the first game, while Lakeside’s Brianne Jolley led the way with 13 points in the second game.

The 16U Stars dropped a 63-57 decision to the Central California Bakersfield Power. Cheney’s Anna Getz finished with a team-high 12 points.

American Legion

The Blue Devils took advantage of the long ball to post a pair of victories over the North Stars in AAA American Legion baseball action.

George Petticrew pitched six innings, belted a solo homer and added an RBI single to lead the Blue Devils to a 9-7 decision in the opener. Ryan Corigliano also homered for the winners.

In the nightcap, Jeff Lafferty ripped two doubles and a homer and Brian Coe homered and singled twice to lead the Blue Devils to a 17-4 victory.

Daryn Steeneck went 3 for 6 in the two games to pace the North Stars.

All-Star Classic leftovers

Captains for the East-West Football Classic played Friday night at Albi Stadium were quarterback Drew Miller of Lakes (Tacoma), Woodinville safety-quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, linebacker Grady Smalling of Lynnwood and Josh Jansen, a linebacker from Kamiak for the West and linebacker Ty Gregorak of West Valley and Al Cotton of Wilson for the East. … The Lynn Rosenbach Awards of Excellence went to Donovan Dashiell of South Kitsap for the East and Miller for the West. … The $1,000 scholarships provided by the Athletic Roundtable, which sponsored the game, went to Mark Leazer of Clover Park for the West and Jon Burbidge of Tumwater.
