Cda Kiwanis Choose Scholars Of The Month
The Coeur d’Alene Kiwanis have announced the Scholars of the Month for January and February.
Natalie Joy, daughter of Ed and Linda Joy, has been named the Kiwanis Scholar of the Month for January.
Joy, the 1997 Lake City High School valedictorian, participates in symphonic band, studies calculus and has completed three years of French.
She also is active in the Coeur d’Alene Youth Symphony and the Coeur d’Alene Jazz Group, has participated in ninth grade track and has volunteered at the Humane Society.
Joy was cited for creative thinking, organization, excellent study habits and self-motivation.
Debra Shaw, a 4.0 grade-point average senior and Lake City High School valedictorian, has been chosen as the Kiwanis Scholar of the Month for February.
Shaw, who is involved in Youth Volunteers in Action, Idaho drug Free Youth and the National Honor Society, has been awarded the University of Idaho Top Scholar Award and has played softball for four years.
She serves as a tutor for Apple Core and as a counselor for Trail Creek and is involved in the Renaissance Club and The Freshman Connection.
Amanda Kennedy was recently named to the Lakeland Junior High School High Honor Roll with a 4.0 grade-point average. Hillary Flowers, was named to the Lakeland Junior High School Honor Roll with a 3.45 grade-point average.
Laura Rude and Cassandra Gulam, both Lake City High School students, have been selected as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The 7,000 selectees are eligible to share scholarship awards worth $27 million and will be notified of specific scholarship offers in March.
Christopher Taylor, a Coeur d’Alene High School senior, had achieved semifinalist status last fall based on high test scores. He is one of 14,000 semifinalists.
Jim Windisch, a Lake City High School senior, and Katie Tucker, and Mike Waggoner, both seniors at Coeur d’Alene High School, are among 35,000 Commended Students being honored for exceptional academic promise by placing in the top 5 percent of more than a million students entering the 1997 Merit Program by taking the 1995 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Contest. They will not compete for scholarship awards.
