Jagr’s Latest Injury May Cost 2 Weeks

Associated Press

In just a few hours, the Pittsburgh Penguins went from being at their healthiest to being banged up and searching for answers once again.

Jaromir Jagr returned from a three-game absence to play just a little more than one period in a 4-1 loss at Detroit Thursday night. He could miss at least two weeks after reinjuring his groin. Defensemen Fredrik Olausson and Jason Woolley suffered similar injuries and will at least miss today’s game at New Jersey.

Leafs lose star

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Mathieu Schneider, one of the team’s top defensemen, will miss the remainder of the season after undergoing abdominal surgery March 7.

With Schneider out, Toronto recalled defenseman David Cooper from St. John’s of the American Hockey League yesterday.

Sharks center fined

Center Bernie Nicholls of the San Jose Sharks drew a two-game NHL suspension for deliberately injuring Florida Panthers defenseman Ed Jovanovski with a crosscheck in a game Tuesday.

Nicholls, who will not be paid for those two games, also was fined the maximum $1,000.
