Lowest Frontier Seeds Tumble

Joe Everson Correspondent

Class AA basketball

Sometimes, when basketball teams play like there’s no tomorrow, there’s still no tomorrow.

And that’s the way it worked Friday night for the four lowest-seeded teams in the Frontier League basketball tournament at East Valley High School and Lewis-Clark State College.

While the two top-seeded boys and girls teams had the night off, two others in each bracket were eliminated in the loser-out round of the district playoffs. Eventually, four Frontier teams - two boys and two girls - will go to the State AA tournament in Tacoma March 12-15.

At East Valley, the third-seeded West Valley boys knocked off sixth-seeded Riverside 58-49 and the third-seeded Riverside girls ousted sixth-seeded Colville 59-38.

In Lewiston, the Clarkston boys and girls, both fourth-seeded, swept a doubleheader from Pullman. The Bantam girls defeated the Greyhounds 58-49 in the opener, while the Clarkston boys edged the Hounds 53-51.

Today’s second-round games, all at EV, begin the double-elimination portion of the tournament. At 1 p.m., the No. 2 seeded Cheney girls (18-2) meet Riverside (14-7) and at 3, the second-seeded Cheney boys (14-7) face West Valley (14-7).

Tonight at 6, the Frontier champion West Valley girls play Clarkston followed by an 8 p.m. contest between boys regular-season champion Colville and Clarkston.
