Munch A Mussel Next Weekend

The annual Penn Cove Mussel Festival will be staged Friday through next Sunday at the Captain Whidbey Inn in Coupeville, Wash., on Whidbey Island.

The bays and coves of Whidbey Island are a hotbed of cultivated mussels and Penn Cove mussels are listed on the menus of some of the best restaurants in the West Coast.

The festival includes tours of the mussel farms as well as plenty of opportunities to eat these tasty shellfish.

Room packages at the Captain Whidbey Inn are available for those attending the festival. For information: (800) 366-4097.

For those looking ahead

The hype’s already started for the turn-of-the-century celebrations on New Year’s Eve 1999 and some events and tours are already sold out.

That means it really is not too early to start planning how you’re going to ring in the new century. A number of special tours will be offered so travelers can celebrate while on the road and a brochure listing 16 luxury tours is now available from Travcoa.

Tours include a New Year’s Eve waltz at the Imperial Hofburg Palace in Vienna, cruising in the Galapagos Islands, camping in Masai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, cruising down the Nile River, dancing in Monte Carlo or attending the grand celebration in Paris.

For a copy of the “Turn of the Century” brochure, call Travcoa at (800) 992-2003.

Two ways to ride through Holland

Bicycling through the countryside of Holland sounds so relaxing. Add time spent barging the rivers in Holland and you might have the makings for a perfect vacation.

But there are restrictions for this tour: you must be a woman at least age 40.

The travel company Outdoor Vacations for Women Over 40 is offering a barging and biking vacation in Holland April 16-26 - just in time to see the tulips bloom. Travelers can choose each day to join the schedule bicycle tour or view the countryside from the deck of the barge. For information: Outdoor Vacations, PO Box 200, Groton, MA 01450; (508) 448-3331. Move quickly, though, because inquiry deadline for this trip is Friday.

In last week’s column, the telephone number for Victoria Clipper Cruises was incorrect. The correct number is (800) 888-2535.
