Nader To Speak At Ewu

Nina Culver Correspondent

Ralph Nader, consumer rights advocate, will speak at Eastern Washington University on Thursday on “Who Will Stand for Corporate Responsibility?”

His talk, part of EWU’s speaker series, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Showalter Hall on the Cheney campus.

Nader has been an advocate of auto safety since his mid-1960s book, “Unsafe At Any Speed,” which detailed safety faults in the automobile industry and led to passage of the 1966 motor safety laws.

Last fall he wrote “Driving in Reverse: The Crash of the Successful Federal Traffic Safety Program.”

He also lobbied - unsuccessfully - against repeal of the national speed limit.

Nader and “Nader’s Raiders,” a group of young like-minded followers in the ‘60s, started numerous citizen organizations, including the consumer watchdog group, Public Citizen. Some groups led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Safe Drinking Water Act, and the Meat and Poultry Inspection Laws.

Nader, named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century, was also a 1996 presidential candidate on the Green Party ticket.

His many consumer-education books include “Winning the Insurance Game,” “Why Women Pay More” and “Getting the Best From Your Doctor.”

Nader’s EWU presentation is free and open to the public.
