Head-On Collision Sends 5 To Hospital

A two-car accident sent five people to the hospital Saturday in Pend Oreille County.

The accident occurred about 6 p.m. on U.S. Highway 2 near North Shore Road, the Washington State Patrol reported.

A northbound 1993 Ford Escort station wagon driven by Richard L. Girouard, 28, of Newport collided in the southbound lane with a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Donald Knicely, 37, of Priest River, Idaho, the state patrol said. Both vehicles were totaled.

Girouard and his two passengers - wife Heather and son Nicholas - were treated and released.

Knicely was taken to Newport Hospital with complaints of a sore chest. His wife Sharon suffered a fractured leg, the WSP said.
