Idaho’s Final Game A Very Bad Dream Rival Broncos Dominate Play While Blasting Vandals 73-53

Games like Sunday afternoon’s Idaho-Boise State encounter in the BSU Pavilion are enough to leave basketball coaches waking up for months in the cold sweat of a recurring nightmare.

Not only were Kermit Davis’ Idaho Vandals demolished 73-53 by arch-rival BSU, they made only five field goals in shooting a frigid 29.4 percent in the first half. They also committed 19 turnovers for the game and were assessed four technical fouls.

To say it was a dismal afternoon for Idaho on a dreary day is an understatement. So, as the Broncos (14-12, 9-7) prepared to head for Reno, Nev., and the Big West Conference men’s tournament, the Vandals turned back to Moscow, their season ended at 13-17, 5- 11.

“Boise State beat us in every category today,” said Davis, who was slapped with two of the technicals and left the court for good with 1:48 remaining in the first half.

Davis was ejected after protesting referee Willis McJunkin’s treatment of to Idaho guard Robert Scott, who, along with BSU’s Mike Tolman, had just been assessed a technical foul.

Scott had been called for a foul shortly after an intentional foul called on Idaho’s Derrick Elliott.

“We just didn’t come out hard enough,” said senior Eddie Turner, who ended his Idaho career with 19 points and six rebounds. “They outplayed us in every phase of the game.”

Early foul trouble haunted post Jason Jackman. His final game as a Vandal ended with only eight points and six rebounds in 25 minutes.
