School Officials Ask For Yellow Light On Progress Near EV Middle School

East Valley School District officials want to have a flashing yellow light installed on Progress Road in front of East Valley Middle School.

Progress has become an increasingly popular commuter route, and the middle school is the first major building as southbound traffic comes into the suburban area.

Too many drivers fail to slow to safe speeds, school officials say.

The school board will discuss maintenance and other issues surrounding the light with county officials later this month. The board also has to find money to pay for the light, estimated to cost $5,000.

“The traffic problem is most problematic between about November through the end of February, or first of March.

It has to do with the weather and the absence of light when kids come in the morning,” said Ken Woolf, East Valley Middle School principal.

Woolf said the district has talked about several possible solutions, including delaying the start of school some mornings.

“If the roads are like they were this morning,” he said on Tuesday, “it’s just flat dangerous.”
