Balanced Lakeside Advances To Semis Eagles Slow Cascade Star En Route To Quarterfinal Win
Five-on-one will beat one-on-five any day.
So when the Lakeside girls basketball team was faced with stopping the most revered player on the State A level, the outcome was a no-brainer.
Lakeside High School 49, Megan Franza’s Cascade 40.
Franza accounted for 27 points and 18 rebounds. The 5-foot-10 guard put up 27 shots and hit nine. The rest of the team converted 4 of 26 shots and added 16 rebounds.
Lakeside’s balanced attack began with Nikki Petticrew’s 14 points and eight boards, and followed with Kim Wilkins’ 10 points, seven rebounds; Brianne Jolley’s nine points, nine rebounds; and Linsey Heebink’s eight points, four rebounds.
Jolley, who averages 18.6 points per game was just 4 of 14 and picked up her second foul 5 minutes into the game. The University of Washington-bound Franza was on Jolley when the Eagles had the ball. Defensively, Jolley and Petticrew shared time trying to stop Franza.
“We didn’t play a great offensive game. Part of that has to do with the fact they’re a good defensive team,” Lakeside coach Lisa Schultz said. “Cascade is the best defensive team we’ve played all year.”
The win advanced No. 2 Lakeside (24-1) into the semifinal round of the girls State A high school basketball tournament where it will meet No. 7 King’s at 7 p.m. today. The Seattle team beat No. 7 Blaine 44-31 in another quarterfinal game. Blaine was the team that upset No. 1, previously unbeaten Toledo, in the first round. With that, the Eagles’ path became easier.
“Tonight, we’re going have dinner and do a little celebrating,” Schultz said. “But I just told the kids the tournament is just starting. There are teams that are left that are very, very good teams.”
Lakeside already took care of one of the better teams - No. 5 Cascade (22-3). It was the third straight year they met at state. Lakeside holds a 2-1 edge.
Neither team shot the lights out this time around, a fact made evident by the fourth-quarter scoring: Lakeside 5, Cascade 2.
Franza missed her first six shots of the game, but tied the score at 18 when she hit her second straight 3-pointer. She also went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line, all in the first quarter.
Jolley’s turnaround jumper followed by a bucket by Wilkins in the final seconds gave Lakeside a 24-20 halftime lead.
Wilkins, a senior reserve forward, remained hot and scored seven more points in the second half. Her final basket with 4:56 remaining gave the Eagles their first double-digit lead 48-38.
“I’m shocked,” said Wilkins about her performance. “(Guard) Carrie Waddell throws great passes. All I had to do was finish.”
Cascade’s only hope was to keep feeding the ball to Franza, but she only scored one basket down the stretch.
“We were trying to get Megan to get more shots, but at the same time we needed other people to step up,” said Cascade coach Michael Lewis.
