Tour Planned At Bunker Hill
Most visitors to the Silver Valley come to ride Silver Mountain’s gondola, see the Cataldo Mission or stop by other tourist attractions.
Not Fred Hansen.
Hansen is deputy administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. On Monday he’ll take his first tour of the Bunker Hill Superfund Site.
Hansen, EPA’s second-in-command, has never been to Bunker Hill, the nation’s second-largest Superfund site.
He’ll be available to meet with the public during lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Jackass Grille & Pub, which is at the base of Silver Mountain Resort’s gondola.
After lunch, Hansen will get a tour of the Coeur d’Alene River basin, said EPA community relations coordinator Nancy Wilson.
“We thought this might be something interesting because of the mining issues and the (Natural Resources Damage Assessment) lawsuit,” Wilson said.
The EPA is a party to the federal lawsuit, which is taking on mining companies accused of polluting the basin.
