Ccs Women Eliminated From Tourney
Community Colleges of Spokane overcame a sluggish start and a critical injury only to lose another close game Friday, when Bellevue CC pulled out a 55-52 victory that eliminated CCS from the NWAACC women’s basketball tournament.
Apparently drained by a 57-54 loss to top-seeded Clark College in Thursday’s opening round, Spokane (21-12) fell behind 30-22 at halftime. The Sasquatch trailed by 10 points early in the second half when guard Tauni Marchand left the game with an injured knee.
Nonetheless, Spokane ran off a string of points to take a 36-34 lead. Although the Sasquatch fell behind again, they still had a chance to win or tie when they were called for traveling with 12 seconds to play.
Alana Carlander scored 14 points as the only CCS player in double figures. The Sasquatch held a 49-43 rebounding edge, but shot only 32.8 percent, sinking 19 of 57 field goals.
Coach Bruce Johnson was disappointed to see Spokane’s season end.
“We had a good year, but it’s kind of sad because we should have won both games,” he said. “We outrebounded them and outplayed them, but we didn’t shoot that well and that was the difference.”
Bellevue will play the winner of Lower Columbia’s game with host Skagit Valley today at 1 p.m. for fourth place.
