Five Area Priests Named Monsignors

Nina Culver Correspondent

Five priests in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Spokane have been awarded the title of monsignor by the Vatican in Rome.

Monsignor is an honorary title conferred in recognition for service to the church. The pastors were recommended by Bishop William Skylstad.

The monsignors’ investitures and blessings will be in the parishes they serve and will continue to serve:

Monsignor Pedro Ramirez will be honored at 7 tonight at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Pasco.

Monsignor John Steiner’s service will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 8112 N. Howard Drive.

Monsignor Frank Bach will be recognized at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 304 S. Adams Road.

Monsignor Robert Pearson will be honored at 4 p.m. March 16, at St. Augustine Roman Catholic Church, 428 W. 19th.

Monsignor James Ribble’s investiture will be at 7 p.m. April 4 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside.

Kosher dinner sold out

Tickets for Temple Beth Shalom’s 57th annual Kosher Dinner have sold out. The dinner, at 1322 E. 30th, will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday.

The menu includes kosher roast brisket of beef, side dishes and dessert. Dinners to go will also be available.

Mission hosts banquet

Jim Sky, a Native American with a success story about how the Union Gospel Mission helped him get his life in order, will be the keynote speaker for the mission’s annual banquet March 14 at the Spokane Valley Red Lion Inn.

Jason Hanson, a Spokane native and place-kicker with the Detroit Lions, will also speak at the two banquets that day: a noon luncheon and 6:30 dinner.

The luncheon and dinner are free, but admission is by ticket only and seating is limited. A free-will offering will be collected to cover the cost of the meal.

To arrange for tickets, call the mission at 535-8510.

Catholic Appeal climbs

The Catholic Diocese of Spokane’s annual Catholic Appeal had raised a little more than $1 million from 5,300 donors as of Wednesday. The goal is to raise $1.625 million to help support the bishop’s office, programs and services offered to diocese churches and schools, care of retired priests and the education of seminarians.

Appeal pledges are still being accepted. Envelopes are available in churches throughout the diocese.

Music at Lourdes

Music at Lourdes will present an organ concert at 3 p.m Sunday at the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside. The free concert will feature organists James Barrett and Janet Satre Ahrend playing music for two organs and music for one organ, four hands.

Barrett is the cathedral’s director of music. Ahrend is an adjunct faculty member at Gonzaga University, where she teaches organ and piano.
