Lakeside Girls Stopped In Bid For State A Crown

Lisa Schultz could barely speak.

A nasty case of laryngitis and a reality-jolting loss in the semifinals of a state tournament will do that to a coach.

“We didn’t shoot well, we didn’t rebound well,” said a teary-eyed Schultz after the game, leaning against the wall outside the Lakeside dressing room at the girls State A high school basketball tournament at the Tacoma Dome.

The Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the state and riding a 23-game winning streak, were defeated Friday night by No. 4 King’s of Seattle 48-42. The best they can hope for is a repeat of last year’s third-place finish when they face Omak (21-6) today in the 2:30 p.m. consolation final. The Pioneers lost to Goldendale in the other semifinal 62-53.

During the off-season, Lakeside will long remember the dominating play of King’s (24-3) Heather Reichmann. The 6-foot-1 junior post accounted for a game-high 21 points and 16 of the Knight’s 37 rebounds.

Lakeside’s (23-2) money player, Brianne Jolley, also was a factor, but not in her usual way. Jolley, a 18.6 points per game player, finished with just two points from the free-throw line. She was 0 for 11 from the field.

“She’s trying hard. She’s taking it hard,” Schultz said. “I told the team, ‘We don’t win and we don’t lose just with Brianne.’ We needed just one or two more people to step up. We can’t ride her shoulders.”

Lakeside’s Linsey Heebink and Nikki Petticrew filled that role in the first quarter when the Eagles punished King’s triangle-and-two defense by hitting 4 of 5 3-pointers. They carried a 16-10 lead into the second quarter.

Petticrew, averaging 14.3 points in three tournament games, scored a team-high 14 points and pulled in six of the Eagles’ 20 rebounds. Heebink scored five in the first quarter and finished with 12.

“And then we disappeared,” Schultz said.

Lakeside was outscored 13-4 in the second quarter and found itself trailing at the half 23-20. King’s, a team that hadn’t made it out of the first round with a win in the previous four state tournaments, took its first second-quarter lead 21-20 on Sarah Hiemsta’s lunging layup.

King’s never trailed after that and built the lead to as many as 12 points, 42-30 with 3:10 remaining when Reichmann burned the Eagles on one of her many layups. King’s scored 9 of 9 layups to Lakeside’s 0 of 0.

“(After leading 42-30), we didn’t play very smart for a couple of minutes,” said King’s coach Eric Rasmussen, who instructed his team to switch to a successful match-up zone defense in the second half.

The lapse would have allowed Lakeside to jump back into the game, had they taken advantage of the Knights’ 0-for-5 free-throw shooting in the final 24 seconds. They were 7 of 20 on the night. After Petticrew made 2 of 3 free throws to cut the lead to 46-42 with 25 seconds left, the Eagles fouled on three different occasions.

King’s continually missed its foul shots, but pulled down every rebound before running out the clock.

“If we made those free throws, it’s not a game,” Rasmussen said.
