Olympics Bombing Reportedly Linked To 2 Other Atlanta Blasts
Federal investigators have found links between the Centennial Olympic Park pipe bombing and subsequent attacks on an abortion clinic and a gay nightclub, according to news reports Friday.
Citing unidentified sources, Time magazine’s online news service reported the FBI has determined all three bombings involved devices that bear the same “signatures.”
An unusual metal had been used in components of all three sets of devices, Time reported sources as saying.
One source also said the timers and copper wiring in the fusing mechanisms were the same.
CBS News reported that metallurgical tests at the Department of Energy’s National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on debris from the Olympic bombing showed “a similarity” with fragments from the other bombings.
FBI spokesman Jay Spadafore denied that such a conclusion has been drawn.
“We’re saying there are similarities but there are also differences. Consequently, it’s not possible to conclude that any of the devices were made by the same person or persons,” Spadafore said Friday.
