Maylana Martin showed why she was the freshman of the year in the Pacific-10 Conference, scoring 25 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the UCLA Bruins past visiting Washington State 85-63 Saturday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion.
Martin and the Bruins (13-14, 7-11) got scoring help from Melanie Pearson, who scored 15, Tawana Grimes with 11 and Takiyah Jackson with 10.
Amy Saneholtz and Yvonne Kunze each scored 15 for WSU (10-17, 4-14), while Jade Hyett added 13.
Hyett handed out eight assists and made four steals, pushing her season totals to 205 assists and 123 steals. She became the first Pac-10 player to lead the league in both categories in one season and also became the first player in women’s Pac-10 history to top 200 assists and 100 steals in one season.
The Bruins broke loose from WSU midway through the second half and never let the Cougars get back in the game. Leading by five with 11:32 to play, UCLA went on a 15-2 run, including 10 straight to finish off the run that boosted the home team to a 66-48 advantage with 7:43 to play.
“We hit a stretch where we made several poor decisions with the ball and UCLA got hot,” WSU coach Harold Rhodes said. “We were not patient.”
