Grohs Knows She’ll Be Back

Jon Hay Correspondent

Region 18 notebook

Perhaps no one has watched the Region 18 Tournament as emotionally as Julie Grohs of North Idaho College.

Grohs, a starting guard at the start of the season, tore a knee ligament in NIC’s sixth game. Her year was over. After starting last year, Grohs would have been a key player on a team that is heading to nationals.

“I still get nervous before games,” she said. “I want them to win so bad, but I want to be a part of it.”

Grohs was granted a medical hardship, which allows her to return next season. She hopes it’s not a year too late.

“It’s been so hard because I’m close to all the sophomores that are leaving,” she said. “We’ve got some good freshmen, though, that I’m looking forward to playing with next year.”

Call me anytime

NIC women’s coach Greg Crimp was in a panic after the Cardinals’ semifinal win over Utah Valley on Friday night. He couldn’t find videotape of a regular-season game against Ricks, NIC’s opponent in the championship game, and called NIC post Erin Dowhy looking for it.

“I told her to call me, even if it was 3 in the morning,” Crimp said.

When he awoke Saturday morning, the tape was wrapped up in his morning paper. Apparently Dowhy had made a late-night stop.

“I asked her if she got any sleep last night, and she just smiled,” Crimp said.

All-Region announced

NIC picked up a pair of first-team All-Region selections. Men’s point guard Todd Myles and women’s post Shawna Rainer were chosen. Myles’ backcourt partner, Shawn Myrick, made the second team along with Jana Nearing of the women’s squad. Andre McKanstry and Mandy Jacques were given honorable mention. NIC men’s coach Hugh Watson was named coach of the year.
