Nic Men, Women Face Unknown

North Idaho College men’s basketball team will face Bossier Parish College of Bossier City, La., March 19 in the first round of the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas.

In the women’s tournament in Tyler, Texas, the NIC women’s team will open against Hiwassee College of Madisonville, Tenn. March 18.

Hiwassee, which won the Region 7 title on Sunday, was ranked No. 10 in the final regular-season poll. NIC was No. 14.

The NIC men’s and women’s teams captured the Region 18 Tournament titles Saturday at Christianson Gym on the North Idaho College campus.

College baseball

The Whitworth Pirates baseball team saw its record fall to 1-3 after losing to Central Washington and George Fox in Caldwell, Idaho, on Sunday.

GFU scored seven runs in the first three innings en route to a 10-5 victory in the opener. Central won the nightcap 9-6.

Pirates second baseman Chad Ripke went 6 for 8 at the plate in the doubleheader. He scored four runs and drove in a pair.

Skiing

Molly Maixner of the Schweitzer Area Ski Racing team finished in fourth place in the Super G at the United States Ski Association Western Regional J-2 Olympics at Mount Alyeska, Alaska on Saturday.

Maixner finished 8th in the giant slalom Sunday.

Maixner, a sophomore at Gonzaga Prep, is one of 71 skiers in her age group. Competition continued with a slalom event Sunday.

Motorcycle racing

Joe Kopp’s 1997 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Grand National Series racing season started in disappointing fashion Saturday night at Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Mica resident, who rides for Harley Davidson, won his two preliminary heats but had to drop out when he lost his clutch early in the 25-lap main event.
