Army Joins Conference

Compiled From Wire Services

The Army football team is joining Conference USA in 1998, a move that ends the U.S. Military Academy team’s long-standing status as an independent.

The move by the Cadets, who finished last season with a 10-2 record, leaves eight Division I-A football independents. Army had been an independent since 1890.

“I know this is a significant break with tradition,” said West Point superintendent Lt. Gen. Daniel W. Christman. “It makes enormous sense to break with our tradition of ‘independence’ and affiliate with a conference.”

College football’s current structure, with more bowl bids and television money going to conference members, makes joining a league a necessity, Christman said.
