The Slice Ice Storm May Be Over, But Nature Still In Charge

Usually, when the wind picks up in March, it make sense to think about the approach of spring.

But this year is different. This year, a stiff wind can be a reminder of November and the ice storm. That’s because countless broken tree branches are still ready to fall. And sometimes all it takes is one gust.

We were walking near the Cheney Cowles Museum the other day when we heard a snap and crashing sound high above us. When a harmless twig fell near the sidewalk, we felt pretty silly about having flinched.

Then we saw a guy pointing up above us. There, hung up on another bough, was a snapped-off branch about the size of a compact car.

You’ll understand if you’re one of those people who pats his keys every 30 seconds: You know how some people around here put their wallets in a more secure pocket when they visit larger cities? Well, that leads us to a question. Do people from small towns who come to Spokane for the B Tournament take similar stepped-up security precautions?

If Disney created husbands: Someone at the Rosauers at 14th and Lincoln on Spokane’s South Hill has a sense of humor. Between the bakery and the wine aisle, there’s a small display of children’s coloring books and storybooks. “Snow White” and “Beauty and the Beast” are among the selections. The little display also includes a fantasy book of a slightly different kind, Modern Bride magazine.

Just wondering: What Spokane area teacher is the absolute best at taking a student’s idiotic observation and rephrasing so that it almost seems insightful?

Sign of the season: A caller said she can tell spring cleaning is under way around here when all manner of trash and junk starts getting illegally dumped at Riverside State Park.

We recommend: “Fresh Air” with Terry Gross at 1 p.m. Sunday through Thursday on KPBX-FM.

Eclectic mix of guests. Low-key, engaging interviewing style.

It was the right word, spelled correctly: But a sign Peter Nufer saw at the Northeast Community Center still made him smile.

“Bazaar Volunteers Wanted.”

Warm-up question: Does driving up Monroe ever make you feel as if you are in a movie car-chase scene?

Today’s Slice question: If you could have lunch with anyone living in the Inland Northwest, who would you pick?
