Gonzaga Wins 17-2 With 21 Hits

Gonzaga University put on a 21-hit attack Wednesday to down Chicago State 17-2 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Baseball Classic in Fresno, Calif.

Third baseman Jason Uberuaga had three hits, including a home run and a double, to drive in five runs for the Zags.

In addition to Uberuaga, four other Bulldogs - Donnie Murrell, Brendan Hare, Trevor Davis and Kevin Workman - had three hits in the contest. Hare and Davis had four RBIs each and Murrell scored four times. Ten Gonzaga players had at least one hit.

Charlie Zimmerman pitched six innings for the Zags, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. He struck out six. Jason Sasma and Brian Newton each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

College golf

Eastern Washington, led by Kyle Kelly, placed 14th in an 18-team golf tournament at San Diego on Wednesday. Central Florida won at the par-72, 6,854-yard Shadow Ridge CC course with a 54-hole total of 879. Eastern’s score was 922.

Kelly shot 76-71-76-223 to tie for 16th. Jason Opal of Central Florida won with a 211 total.

The Creek at Qualchan Men’s Club invites prospective members to come to its first meeting tonight at 7 in the clubhouse. Head pro Mark Gardner will discuss course conditions and upcoming events.
