Obituaries

Norma McGregor Salem, Ore.

Service for Norma Gantzer McGregor, 70, will be at 11 a.m. today at Pullman United Methodist Church. There will be private burial at Colfax (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mrs. McGregor, a former longtime Pullman resident, died last Friday in Phoenix, Ariz., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

She was born in St. Paul, Minn.

She attended the University of Minnesota for a year and then moved to San Francisco, where she met her husband, Sherman McGregor.

They were married in 1948 and settled in Hooper, Wash., where the McGregor family operated a ranch. They later built a home in Pullman, and Mrs. McGregor returned to school and completed her college degree in 1978.

She was a founding member of the Whitman County Historical Society and served as a trustee of the Whitman County Library.

In 1980 she moved to Washington, D.C., where she received her master’s degree in library science from Catholic University. She also served as a librarian at the Maret School.

She moved to Salem in 1990.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. McGregor is survived by two sons, Alex McGregor of Pullman and Andy McGregor of Juneau, Alaska; a daughter, Mary McGregor of Bothell, Wash.; two sisters, Ruth Burden of Salem and Dolores Borreson of North Carolina; two half-sisters, Joanne Affeldt of Minnesota and Linda Kimmick of Colorado; two half-brothers, Clark Gantzer of Missouri and John Gantzer of California; and five grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Whitman County Historical Society or the Whitman County Library.

Charles ‘Jim’ Rodgers Spokane

Service for Charles N. “Jim” Rodgers, 79, is set for 10 a.m. Monday at Riplinger Funeral Home. Private burial will follow at West Bonner Evergreen Cemetery in Priest River, Idaho.

Mr. Rodgers died Tuesday.

He was born in Lincoln, Neb., and had lived in Spokane for more than 45 years.

He was a warehouse foreman for Triangle Nut for 20 years.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

Mr. Rodgers is survived by his wife of 45 years, Alice Rodgers; two sons, Leo and John Rodgers, both of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Amy Swann Spokane

Service for Amy R. Swann, 27, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Heritage Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Ms. Swann died Tuesday from complications due to muscular dystrophy.

She was born in Seattle and had lived in Spokane for 25 years.

Ms. Swann graduated from Ferris High School and had worked at Sacred Heart Medical Center as a receptionist for more than eight years.

She is survived by her mother, Donna Swann; two sisters, Kristy and Peggy Swann, both at home; and her grandparents, Ruth Swann of Piney Point, Md., and Ronald and May Triplett of Spokane.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Dale Olson Davenport, Wash.

Graveside service for Dale E. Olson, 64, will be at 1 p.m. today at Mountain View Cemetery in Davenport. Strate Funeral Home in Davenport is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Olson, who was born in Spokane, died Sunday.

A lifetime Davenport resident, he graduated from Davenport High School.

He served in the Navy for four years.

Mr. Olson was a farmer and a member of the American Legion and the Bluestem Grange.

He is survived by his mother, Lea Olson of Davenport; a sister, Mary Jane Schultz of Tacoma; and a brother, Jerry Olson of Davenport.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lincoln County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Lincoln Nursing Home in Davenport.

Bueford O’Keefe Moscow, Idaho

Graveside service for Bueford V. O’Keefe, 80, will be at a later date at the Bovill (Idaho) Cemetery. VassarRawls Funeral Home of Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. O’Keefe, who was born in Springfield, Ore., died last Friday of congestive heart failure.

He attended school in Seattle and Bovill, including Bovill High School, and later worked for a railroad.

Mr. O’Keefe had also worked for Potlatch Corp., IIalls Lumber and Bennett Lumber as a mechanic and equipment operator before retiring and moving to Moscow in 1979.

He worked part time doing lawn maintenance after his retirement until poor health forced him to quit in 1992.

Mr. O’Keefe was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite, in 1992.

Survivors include a son, Gary O’Keefe of Moscow; a daughter, Gayle O’Keefe Harshbarger of Spokane; six sisters, Marjorie Torgenson of Arizona, Frances Hammond of Oregon, Patty Fink of Alaska, June Rouleau of Spokane, and Kathy Hughes and Shirley Denevan, both of Lewiston; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Julia Johnston Spokane

Memorial service for Julia Johnston, 89, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Riplinger Funeral Home.

Mrs. Johnston, who died Tuesday, was born in Troy, Idaho.

She had lived in Spokane for 26 years and was a homemaker.

Mrs. Johnston was a member of Women of the Moose.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Johnston.

Mrs. Johnston is survived by a daughter, Mabel Knoles of Spokane; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.

Mildred Erickson Spokane

No service will be held for Mildred N. Erickson, 84, at her request. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Erickson died March 2.

Born in Leroy, Mo., she had lived in Spokane for more than 30 years.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Paul Erickson, died in 1983.

Mrs. Erickson is survived by a sister, Sylvia Pilgeram of Spokane.

Jim Shelton Spokane

Memorial service for retired newspaper photographer Jim Shelton will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home.

Mr. Shelton, 68, died Tuesday.

He was born in Spokane and attended Lewis and Clark High School.

He retired from The SpokesmanReview and the Spokane Chronicle in 1987.

Mr. Shelton is survived by his wife, Judy; a son, Jim Shelton of Spokane; and two sisters, Jeanne Spitzer of Rocklin, Calif., and Joanne Olson of Spokane.

Betty Riedel Spokane

No service will be held for Betty Ann Riedel, 66, at her request. Heritage Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Riedel, who was born in Goldsboro, N.C., died Wednesday.

She graduated from Anderson College and Anderson School of Nursing in South Carolina.

She came to Spokane 24 years ago and worked as a nurse counselor for Excelsior Youth Center and the Crisis Residential Center.

Survivors include her husband of 23 years, William Riedel; and a sister, Margaret Denmark of Goldsboro.

Bertha Hanson Spokane

Vigil service for Bertha Mae Hanson, 88, will be at 7 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Hanson, a 60-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday.

She was born in Winsted, Minn.

She graduated from the University of Minnesota with an education degree and taught high school in Reeder, N.D.

She was a member of St. Anthony Parish, the Altar Society and the Legion of Mary.

Her husband, Gordon Hanson, died in 1971.

She is survived by six sons, Robert , William, Richard and James Hanson, all of Spokane, Donald Hanson of Bothell, Wash., and Charles Hanson of Renton, Wash.; a daughter, Diane McDonald of Redding, Calif.; a sister, Marie Forseth of Spokane; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities.

Matilda Hoff Spokane

Service for Matilda Hoff, 95, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Home

Mrs. Hoff, who was born in Russia, died Tuesday.

She came to America with her parents when she was 5 and settled in Quincy, Wash. They later moved to a farm between Ritzville and Odessa.

In 1920 she married John Hoff. They moved to a farm near Marlin, Wash., and in 1946 they moved to the Spokane Valley.

In 1984 they moved to Holman Gardens Retirement Home.

Mrs. Hoff was a homemaker and a member of Pasadena Park Nazarene Church.

Her husband died in 1987. She is survived by three daughters, Bernice Schrenk and Elaine Hirschel, both of Spokane, and Amy Clark of Cedarville, Ohio; a brother, Dan Reider of Kennewick; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Marion Shellberg Warden, Wash.

Visitation for Marion Shellberg, 82, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home in Spokane. Service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Spokane’s Bethany Presbyterian Church, with burial at the Cedonia (Wash.) Cemetery.

Mr. Shellberg, who died Sunday, was born in Cedonia.

He had lived in Spokane since 1940 and owned Quality Welding and Shellberg Electric. He moved to Warden four months ago.

He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church and was involved with Spokane Christian Businessmen.

His wife, Margaret Shellberg, died in 1981.

He is survived by two sons, Marvin Shellberg of Cheney and Marty Shellberg of Roseburg, Ore.; two daughters, Mary Hansen of Warden and Marcia Thorud of Hillsboro, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Bernice Beagles Spokane

Service for Bernice C. Beagles, 74, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pines Cemetery Mausoleum. Burial will follow at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Beagles, who died Tuesday, was born in Irvin, Wash.

She graduated from West Valley High School and Kinman Business University.

She was a homemaker and a longtime Spokane Valley resident.

Mrs. Beagles is survived by her husband of 27 years, A.R. “Russ” Beagles; a daughter, Kathy Prindiville; two sons, Gary and Larry Beagles; and two brothers, Alphonso and Sam Manfred.
