U.S. Seeks Spot In World Cup

Associated Press

Following a scoreless tie at Jamaica two weeks ago, the pressure will be on the United States in today’s World Cup qualifier against Canada.

The United States and Canada, which opened with a 4-0 loss at Mexico, are in the six-nation final round of qualifying from the North and Central American and Caribbean region. The top three teams in the group, which also includes Costa Rica and El Salvador, qualify for the 1998 World Cup in France.

U.S. coach Steve Sampson complained this week that the U.S. Soccer Federation isn’t giving him enough time with his players, deferring to Major League Soccer clubs.

The U.S. team is 0-4-2 this year and has scored just three goals.
