Arizona Releases Esiason

Compiled From Wire Services

The Arizona Cardinals released Boomer Esiason, a move that enables the veteran quarterback to pursue a starting job with another NFL team.

Esiason, who will turn 36 in April, was unhappy sharing playing time last season with Kent Graham.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free agent Elvis Grbac to a five-year contract, the third straight time the team has looked to the San Francisco 49ers for a starting quarterback. Financial terms of the contract weren’t disclosed, although the San Francisco Chronicle reported the contract will average $4 million a season plus at least a $3 million signing bonus.

The St. Louis Rams signed free-agent linebacker Michael Jones, the Oakland Raiders’ leading tackler the past two seasons, to a four-year contract.

The New York Jets signed free-agent cornerback Jerome Henderson, who spent part of 1996 with the New England Patriots under new Jets coach Bill Parcells.

The Atlanta Falcons re-signed defensive end Todd Kelly, an unrestricted free agent, to a one-year contract. The Falcons also added cornerback Derek Grier, a four-year Canadian Football League veteran.

A judge in McKinney, Texas, has sealed the divorce record of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver-cornerback Deion Sanders.

Last September, Deion and Carolyn Sanders sued each other for divorce. Days later, they announced that they had reconciled. Earlier this month, Mrs. Sanders revived her petition, accusing her husband of adultery.
