Report: Eastman A Candidate For Richmond Job

Washington State men’s basketball coach Kevin Eastman will meet this week with University of Richmond athletic director Chuck Boone to discuss the Spiders’ opening, a Virginia newspaper reported Tuesday.

Eastman, a 1977 Richmond graduate, is apparently one of several candidates for the job, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Eastman was on the road recruiting and could not be reached Tuesday, his secretary said.

When Eastman’s name was mentioned earlier this month in connection with the Richmond job, the 41-year-old WSU coach dismissed the rumor.

“There’s nothing to it,” Eastman said in a March 5 interview. “We like it here. I could see myself being here for quite a while.”

Salary might be a major obstacle in reuniting Eastman with his alma mater.

The third-year WSU coach makes $115,000 in base salary and about $250,000 per year when other perks are included. Bill Dooley, fired as Richmond coach on March 5, earned a total package worth a reported $98,000.

Richmond also is believed to be interested in Drexel’s Bill Herrion, Cornell’s Scott Thompson and Delaware coach Mike Brey, the Times-Dispatch reported. , DataTimes
