‘As You Like It’ Comes To Pullman

The Acting Company, a national touring organization specializing in Shakespeare and other classics, brings “As You Like It” to Pullman on Wednesday.

This sylvan comedy is generally considered one of the cheeriest and most romantic of all of Shakespeare’s works. The plot is a typical Shakespearean mistaken-identity device: In this case, the young Rosalind disguises herself as a boy in order to be near the love of her life, Orlando.

The action all takes place in the springlike and leafy Forest of Arden. The finale consists of matrimonial bliss quadrupled: Four weddings (and no funerals).

The Acting Company, a New York-based troupe, has trooped 500,000 miles through 47 states and nine foreign countries since its founding in 1972 by John Houseman and Margot Harley. It was an offshoot of the drama division of the Juilliard School. It has brought theater to nearly 2 million people.

“It serves not merely as a training ground for young performers,” says the Oxford Companion to American Theatre, “but as a practical seminar for students of the theater.”

“As You Like It” will be performed Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum at Washington State University.

Reserved tickets are $20 and $25 for adults, $18 and $25 for senior citizens, and $7 and $25 for students. General-admission tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens, and $5 for students. Tickets are available through the coliseum box office, (509) 335-1514 and G&B Select-a-Seat outlets, (800) 325-SEAT.
