Saints, Pack Eye Shuler
Heath Shuler’s agent informed the Washington Redskins on Thursday that his client has an offer from the New Orleans Saints. And after meeting with Shuler on Thursday in Green Bay, Packers General Manager Ron Wolf indicated that the Super Bowl champions also would like to have him.
“We’re going to pursue it,” Wolf said. “It’s an ideal situation for us.”
Neither the Packers nor Saints can offer Shuler the kind of money or playing time that he once sought. He would be a backup quarterback on both teams - to two-time NFL MVP Brett Favre in Green Bay and to 11-year veteran Jim Everett in New Orleans.
Still, both teams can offer something else Shuler has been seeking: a new start.
Both the Packers and Saints are bumping against the NFL’s salary cap and would be forced to offer Shuler a relatively low base salary of $400,000 or less. But both teams can load the contract with incentives.
