Pentagon Steps Up Security After Threat

From Staff And Wire Reports

The Pentagon was placed on a heightened security status after a bomb threat.

Pentagon spokesman Glenn Flood said Friday that everyone entering the building was subject to search and that all bags were being searched by X-ray machine. In addition, the Defense Protective Service brought in additional resources, including canine units.

Special Pentagon police stood guard at some entrances to the building and at Defense Secretary William Cohen’s formal welcoming ceremony for Norwegian Defense Minister Jorgen Kosmo on the parade ground.

The “Threatcon Alpha” alert designates a “general threat of possible terrorist activity,” the nature and extent of which are unpredictable, according to a Pentagon circular. The Pentagon said the bomb threat was received Thursday, but gave no other details.
