Veradale Church Will Construct Fellowship Hall

Nina Culver Correspondent

Some much-needed space is being added to Veradale United Church of Christ. Church members will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Sunday for a new fellowship hall and kitchen.

“The sanctuary has been a multipurpose room for years,” says the Rev. Linda Crowe. It was tough to coordinate multiple activities, sometimes scheduled for the same time. The new space will give church members the breathing room they have been wanting for years.

“It means the church will be more usable,” says Crowe. “The space has been sorely needed for a long time.”

Church members raised some of the cost in a fund drive that ended two years ago. And they plan to sell three lots west of the church on Burns Road to raise more money.

In addition to construction of the new 2,000-square-foot fellowship hall and kitchen, the existing sanctuary will be remodeled to make it handicap accessible.

The final price tag is expected to be close to $160,000.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Sunday at the church, 611 N. Progress Road.

Event will mark end of fasting

After 40 days of prayer and fasting, members of 80 churches and other organizations are inviting members of all Spokane County churches to attend an assembly of the church of Spokane and the Inland Northwest.

The celebration will be Friday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Fourth Memorial Church, 2000 N. Standard.

Whitworth College, Moody Northwest Bible College, Union Gospel Mission and the Coyote Rich Correctional Center near Tri-Cities joined area churches in a program of 40 days of prayer and fasting.

Members of each church and organization were encouraged to spend time in intensified prayer, to fast for 40 days, and attend overnight prayer gatherings each Friday during Lent.

Few people fasted for 40 days; most took turns.

The assembly will bring together Christians of many denominations and ethnic groups in a celebration of the end of the fasting and prayer. The celebration will consist of prayer and testimony.

The Rev. Cliff Howery of the Bethel Baptist Church in Coeur d’Alene will officiate.

Rocker to appear at Whitworth

Christian rock star Kenny Marks will perform in Whitworth College’s Cowles Auditorium at 11 a.m. Monday.

Marks has released eight albums in the past 10 years. He is at Whitworth as the 1997 Staley Distinguished Lecturer. Monday’s concert is free and open to the public.
