L-C State Batters Take A Beating From WSU Pitchers, But Warriors Win
Washington State University pitchers hit seven batters and walked another six Saturday during visiting Lewis-Clark State College’s 14-9 non-league baseball win in the Cougars’ Bailey Field home opener.
In the Warriors’ seven-run seventh inning, WSU pitchers hit four batters and walked three. Elliott Strankman’s two-run double was the lone hit during the rally.
Tristan Fike had three RBIs for the Warriors (13-5-1). Steve Curran of WSU (2-19) finished 5 for 5 and scored twice.
LCSC, 3-0 against WSU this year, aims for 4-0 today in a game at Lewiston.
Designated hitter Matt Muller hit a three-run home run to left field in the fourth and Benny Craig added a two-run blast in the fifth - his eighth of the year - as Loyola Marymount beat visiting Gonzaga University 10-6 in the opener of a West Coast Conference doubleheader at Los Angeles.
Zags pinch-hitter Brian Canny reached winner Ben Bonilla (4-0) for a three-run shot, his first, in the sixth. GU’s Charlie Zimmerman (2-3) allowed eight earned runs in three innings.
No details were reported on the nightcap. GU entered 7-9-1, 1-1, while LMU was 10-18, 1-1.
Whitworth’s losing streak reached five after dropping 3-1 decisions to Albertson College and Central Washington University at the Whitworth round robin.
Steve Barningham’s two-run homer in the fifth backed the four-hit pitching of Kevin Downey (3-2) as Albertson opened the day by beating the Pirates (3-8). Whitworth’s Tim Bishop homered in the bottom of the fifth.
Jason Matthews’ two-out, two-run double in the third helped CWU over Whitworth in the day’s final game. Albertson beat CWU 6-4 in the middle game. The teams run a similar schedule today.
Central Arizona took advantage of three errors to score seven runs in the eighth and beat visiting Community Colleges of Spokane 14-9 at Coolidge, Ariz.
The Vaqueros trailed 9-7 after Gavin Hare’s two-run homer in the third and Trek Davis’ two-run single in the fifth. Chad Kline added two doubles and two RBIs for the Sasquatch (3-4).
In Pasco, Jason Bay’s two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning allowed visiting North Idaho College to beat Columbia Basin 3-2 and split a non-league doubleheader.
Bay’s blast rescued Shelby Hawkins (1-0), who threw a completegame two-hitter.
The Hawks won the opener 5-4 in 13 innings. Dallas Lasky’s sacrifice fly scored Ian Louie in the 13th.
Track and field
GU’s Joel Perry jumped 6 feet, 8 inches to win the men’s long jump at the seventh annual Tri-Cities Sports Festival meet at Richland.
Ex-WSU Cougar Matt Shaffer of Performance Athletic Track and Field Club won the men’s hammer throw at 205-5.
For Community Colleges of Spokane, Beau Chandler finished second in the men’s javelin (203-3) and James Childs placed second in the men’s long jump (21-10).
